Jack & Taff Fitterer

Hand Bookbinding & Restoration

Paper repair is a regular part of our practice. Dustjackets are a major portion of the value of modern first editions, yet they take most of the wear and tear--literally! Restoration includes repair of tears and losses. Importantly, their restoration requires not only the skill of paper repair, but also that of the artist, to complete the missing image and lettering, without 'over-restoring'. Our object is to produce a piece that reflects its age, but one that has been well taken care of. The upper photos at left show examples of before and after work on a damaged dustjacket.

Other documents can be repaired also. The lower photo shows Taff at work on an eighteenth century hand drawn map of  Calvi in Corsica.
